Photo of the Day (11.30.08)

Flickr user jrodmanjr titled this image of San Francisco's famous prison "Escape from Alcatraz." I happen to like the play on words, almost as much as I like the perspective of this shot. Any time you're taking a photo of a famous landmark, it's fun to try framing it with some nearby objects to add some additional depth and personality. In this case, the chain link fence adds a playful, geometric aspect to the shot, forcing you to give it a second look. Well done!

Do you have any panoramic photos from San Francisco? Or maybe some candid shots from Sweden? Why not share them with our readers at Gadling by adding them to our pool on Flickr? We might just choose one as our Photo of the Day.

After a few hectic days of family, traveling and lots of eating, I thought many of us would enjoy a calming photo such as this one. Taken in Brecon Beacons, Wales by Theodore Scott this photo captures the peacefulness of the rolling hills and clouds, giving us a very relaxing image. I also like the rock wall that draws our eye in and pulls it back into the distance, far down the fields; great perspective!

"Rush Hour in Belize" is the title of this flickr photo from jonrawlinson. Indeed, life has a slower pace in this small Central American nation, famous for its great diving, snorkeling, and fishing.

In this photo, I love the eclectic cast of characters lounging on the wall along the ocean, and the way the dark reef shows through the crystal-clear ocean. Can't wait to visit in a couple weeks and see it for myself!

I have a postcard of a cartoon that says something like this, "Erma, unsure of what to bring to the potluck, brought a loaf of bread." All the other cartoon people in the postcard picture were sporting a loaf of bread as well.

In the case of this photo that was taken by jrodmanjr in the Ferry Building in San Francisco, I'm mostly reminded of abundance. I'm also drawn to the repetition and the crispness of the bread, and the fact that tomorrow it's Thanksgiving.

If you are celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow, may there be delicious bread and loved ones at your table.

If you have any shots of abundance, share them with us at Gadling's Flickr photo pool where they might be chosen as a Photo of the Day.

This is an aerial shot of Lake Nasser, in Abu Simbel, Egypt, taken by flickr user BrittElizabeth. Great shot. But how must it have been taken? From a helicopter, or from a high cliff facing the lake? Or with some super lens?

I also like this shot because it's not something you expect to see when you think of Egypt. In the glory of the Pyramids and the local culture there, we forget that there exist remote, dry, desert-like spots. I also find this shot interesting as it shows arid land next to water; makes you wonder why there isn't more vegetation in this area.

There's something intriguingly dreamlike about this photo from Flickr user Emerald2810. Is it the silhouetted biplanes? The luminous sky blanketed with clouds? I can't quite put my finger on it, but it seems to be laden with hidden symbolism and meaning. In some ways it reminds me of the work of early surrealist photographers like Man Ray.

Shot any of your own surrealist masterpieces during your travels? Why not share them with our Gadling readers? All you have to do is add them to our pool on Flickr, and one might just get chosen as our Photo of the Day.

I think this photo of Manarola, one of the five cillages of Cinque Terre, taken by stellarviewer, is very striking because of the dark clouds in the sky. What's even more interesting is that the photo was composed using five different images, which may be why we get such an intense sky.

This surreal shot from flickr user arunchs was taken at Tsomoriri Lake in Ladakh, India. I love the rich, earthy colors and the sense of otherworldliness this photo brings to mind. Take a look at the Google Images of this lake, and it really looks like it's hard to take a bad photograph there.

Today's photo of the day is by Flickr contributor Bedouin77. These gulls were the perfect target for his Canon 5D. The clarity and sharpness of these birds in flight is rather impressive. The shot was captured in Solalé, Cuba last year.

It reminds me of a scene out of Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach. It's as if the two parents are squawking behind Jonathon saying:

"Why Jon, why?" His mother asked. "Why is it so hard to be like the rest of the flock, Jon? Why can't you leave low flying to the pelicans, the albatross?

Nice work, Bedouin77!

Yes, this is an elephant balanced on its trunk. David and Chi who captured this image at the Musée and Domaine nationales of the Castle of Fontainebleau in France said this sculpture was part of a larger exhibit. What a wonderful use of a castle. The exhibit looks like it may have been like a trip to some strange wonderland.

Unfortunately, the exhibit ended on November 17. My question is, what happened to the elephant? Where does one store such a piece? It seems that this elephant belongs in the library.

If you've been to a fanciful wonderland lately, send us your pictures at Gadling's Flickr Photo Pool.
